A few years ago, I wanted to join a writing group, but I wasn’t sure what I could write about. I have kept a journal since 1992, and have written many articles for mental health organizations, so I felt comfortable in that arena. I wanted to broaden my scope and do some more general writing. I finally settled on writing snippets of memories - especially happy memories. That seemed very workable to me.
I soon found out that there were many benefits to snippet writing. I would remember an event from my life with fondness. One memory would lead to another and the way I looked at my life started to change. Instead of considering my memories sometimes with sadness, my new life view was becoming more positive and cheerful. Rough times started receding and better events marched to the forefront.
My friends in our writing group started calling me a snippeteer. I love being a snippeteer! With snippets, there is no such thing as a writing block because you have thousands of memories to choose from - something to suit your every mood and lift your spirits.
Here is a snippet about my daughter Maribeth’s and my apple pie adventure:
“I had making a pie from scratch on my bucket list for a long time. When my daughter Maribeth was about 3, I decided to make that dream come true. It was hilarious! There was flour everywhere, especially all over Maribeth. She was a happy little girl for sure. When we were done and had achieved the most beautiful and tasty pie ever, we got paper plates and plastic forks and went around the neighborhood handing out slices of pie. One of my best adventures ever!!” 1/10/22
I have since written many different things - poetry, essays, reviews, even a bit of fiction here and there, but I still love my snippets!
